I'm sorry your dad isn't supportive of your love of AG. Before this past Christmas, I actually was hesitant to ask my dad for a doll because I wasn't sure what he would think. I'm glad he's supportive. And even around my friends, Im not really a social person but it's not because of my dolls. I've always been pretty shy. And playing with dolls is better than a lot of things that people our age could be doing.

My BF (well, only sort-of at the moment b/c of the distance... the family here also insists that we're not dating if we're not in the same time zone) is wonderful! He just imed me and I've been telling him about what happened. He just offered to e-mail my dad the following:
"Hi. I'm Dave. i was dating your daughter last semester and just wanted to let you know that I am not bothered by the fact she has dolls. i also believe she has better social skills than I do, and I never had dolls to cause a lack of them"
So, I have it in writing from him!
Thank you all for your support- I don't see anything wrong with my doll collecting, and it's always helpful to be able to vent on a particularly bad day when people make you feel like a freak for it.

That is so sweet of your boyfriend! I really hope that helps you out and I think it's great you're both finding ways to talk to each other.
What a sweetie.

I am so sorry!
My first two AG dolls were purchased for me by a boyfriend. My husband just bought me Lindsey and Jess. In my experience, as long as you let them have computer games they are happy for you to have dolls.
My father always hated dolls. When I was five he came home early one day and my sister and I had our doll stuff all over the living room-- cribs, high chairs, clothes-- and he had a fit. He and my mother had a huge fight and he insisted we would grow up thinking all we could be is pregnant. He would be horrified if he knew I had five AGs all purchased after college. Some people simply do not get it. I love my dolls. I get so much pleasure out of them.
I hope your father will give it a rest and respect your right to decide what is right for you. I hope you find some friends on the west coast soon, too.
Some collectors are NIB collectors and take pleasure from knowing they own X, Y and Z. Some of us are play with it collectors and take pleasure in playing with our collection. I would say you are not investing in AG because you don't keep it all pristine in the original boxes to sell when the value has gone up. But I think almost all of us here are play with it collectors.
Hang in there!

My husband doesn't like dolls at all, but my daughter and I are doll-crazy, so he puts up with it. Every once in a while he'll make a comment about how much I'm buying, but he's put enough into his car to keep it even. Every once in a while, he'll even play dolls with DD and he did sit through the entire AG fashion show that my JSL put on, just to see DD come out for 30 seconds.
Someone on one of the boards (I don't know if it was here, AGPT, or Yahoo) compared AG collecting to model train collecting (which many many men do...). Isn't it pretty much the same thing? Maybe your dad would understand it more if you put it in that context.
Good luck, and I'm glad that your bf (would your family say that you weren't really married if you had a husband in Iraq?) is so sweet.

I was at least one of the people who compared doll-collecting/play to model trains for men. I've seen others compare it to collecting video games.
Jerseycow6, what does your father do for play or relaxation?
How many hobbies or collections and play of grown men can we think of? Let's start a list for "jerseycow6"! They all cost money.
--model trains
--video games
--car parts for restoring an old car
--golf (needs new accessories)
--fishing (needs new equipment)
--wood working
--motorcycles
--watch repair
--making guitars
--carving
--collecting action characters
--collecting Matchbox toys
--home restoration
--gardening
--collecting old games

So sorry your dad thinks of collecting that way. My dad wouldn't mind, because he thinks collecting dolls is better than all the other things kids my age do! As long as they're neatly kept and I'm keeping my grades up, he wouldn't even say anything! Try to explain to your dad that collecting means buying all the pieces to complete your set, so you can 'play' with them, not storing them in boxes.

You can add stamp/coin collecting to that list.
Comic Book Collecting
DVD's-some people have massive DVD libraries.
Home electronics-new tvs, all the latest equipment for them
Computers (Repair and Recreation)

My bf doesn't think AG dolls are weird to own (I'm in my mid 20's). He loves video games and comic books and action figures. I already told him I want to go to AGPNY in September and he said that's fine as long as we go to the comic book store in Times Square that he likes.
A LOT of guys have action figures- that's no different than a doll.
